TL;DR

Wars
  • Arenanet is working on a new native Mac client based on OpenGL which is going to be 'right, not just better'

  • Bugfixing of current mac client slow/will not happen, because focus is on new client

  • There may be a beta phase at some time

  • No plans on supporting Linux

The Problem

The current GW2 Mac client is based on 'Cider', a compatibility layer which translates DirectX graphics to OpenGL graphics by running the game in a mini virtual environment. This translation has an massive overhead which means that the games performance is not even close to the Windows version, on a same mac running windows. Especially since HoT, the client is very slow and crashes on regular bases. On the sales page of HoT they claim that the game 'runs well on the following machines [...]', which is not the case anymore. Thats why I tried to compile a small list on statements about a new mac client, which is urgently needed.

We don’t have much to say about it. That’s often why we are silent. I don’t want to give you all hope of something only to take it away if it doesn’t work out.

When we shipped the game originally we used a third-party shell to 'host' the Windows version. While this got the product out the door on Mac there are some things we haven't been able to do to make it a true Mac application. We are actively experimenting with getting native code that runs directly on the Mac with OpenGL etc. I don't know how long it will take to make it 'real' but I can say that this week we finally got it compiling, linking, and starting up on a Mac before it crashes at the login screen. :)

Just so you know, I'm primarily a Mac user too. I'm going to celebrate with you on the day that playing GW2 on my Mac is as enjoyable as playing it on my PC. But it's a big project.

We can login and see some graphics. Physics is the next major step.

Currently we can patch, run around in several maps, we don't fall through the floor anymore. It is progressing and we will let you guys know when we're ready to go into beta.

We haven't started optimization phase yet, so it's hard to say, but that is the hope [to deliver equivalent performance as the Windows client].

There are currently no plans [on supporting linux].

I'll be honest, most of our focus when it comes to the Mac is on the new Mac client, which is coming along! I will give this a try and write up a bug, but I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up for a timely fix, the timely fix may just be when the new client is finished. If nothing else I will make sure this works in the new client, I get to start testing it soon™.

It will be native and no we don’t have a release date yet. I work closely with the team that is developing it and they are working really hard, but it’s not a trivial project. I promise as soon as we have something concrete you guys will know. We know it’s frustrating and we’re working really hard to make it right, not just better.

We were waiting for this question :) I have had characters running around in game! We are to the point where we're fixing specific bugs instead of the big general ones. We've still got not release date but significant progress is being made!

The core team is relatively small but they're really good :) At some point we will be doing internal playtests so everyone at ArenaNet with a Mac will be contributing. We currently are planning to beta the native client, no eta, but we will make it known. I promised shouting from the rooftops :)

Native Mac update:

  • We have new build servers coming online.

  • We are beginning to expand the client to internal teams to increase testing.

I already answered this elsewhere in the thread, but it appears to have been buried.. A Linux client is unlikely to happen at this time.

It is unlikely we will bring the OpenGL renderer to the Windows builds.

We will release an alpha version of the client for experimental use (like we did with the 64-bit Windows client) when it's building and running internally on a consistent basis. It will probably require a bit of Mac smarts to install it so it will be for hardened explorers only.

  • It generally runs and patches

  • It hitches a bunch, which we are tracking down

  • We still have more internal build system plumbing to do before we release a version for people to play with

'Do you have any idea about when it will be available ?'

Things are in flux enough that we can't really say at this time.

Rest assured, we want this out the door as soon as it's ready.
